Sardinia
Region:
In the south of Sardegna (Sardinia), twenty kilometers from Caligria lies Audarya; nestled amongst the Campidiano plains. This land, where the vineyards and sky join together, has been known as an ideal place for vine growing of the indigenous varietals since ancient times. It’s clay-limestone soil, proximity to the sea, and the area’s microclimate, produce wines with inimitable characteristics.
Audarya, meaning "nobility of the soul" in Sardo, was born in 1950 when Salvatore Pala planted the first vineyard in the fields of Sardinia. Three generations have since tended the vines producing wines. The current generation is led by Salvatore and Nicoletta, who carry with them the vital contribution of their father Enrico's experience.
Today, the estate consists of 37 hectares under vines, 10 of which surround the winery. The plantings are all native varieties from Sardinia in the area of Cagliari: Vermentino, Nuragus, Monica & Cannonau. The family follows Integrated Farming practices, in respect to the surrounding natural habitats and resources. All the bush vines are head-trained and short-espaliered in the traditional Sardinian way with the average age of the vines being over 20 years, the majority of which were planted by Enrico and his father. The altitude is about 150-200 masl and every plot has unique terroir, with soil composition consisting of limestone, marl, and clay. All sites are heavily influenced by sea air from the Gulf of Cagliari.
