Cave des Vins de Cru Lirac

Country:

France

Rhône-Lirac

Region:

Lying between Châteauneuf du Pape and Tavel, the vineyards of Lirac are the most Mediterranean of the Rhône Valley vineyards. In the 16th century, the wines of Lirac had already acquired a reputation for their quality and character and were served at the great royal courts of the day, both in France and abroad.

Lirac produces red, white and rosé wines with a strong character, created by the generosity and the warm sun of the South of France, combined with a delicate sea-air freshness.
CAVE DES VINS DE CRU LIRAC has been established in the heart of the Lirac wine region in 1931. It brings together 55 wine growers whose families, all involved in the daily work at the vineyards and winery, have lived for generations in the four communes that make up the Lirac appellation. Its vineyards cover more than 300 hectares, of which only 100 hectares produce Lirac AOC wines.

The pebbles scattered in the Lirac vineyards are remnants of an ancient terrace deposited by the Rhône River at the start of the Quaternary Period. This ancient terrace is also found on the opposite side of the Rhône, in highly acclaimed Châteauneuf du Pape. Having long been subjected to climatic variations, it consists of quartzite pebbles (100% silica) carried down from the Alps, rolled into pebbles by the river, and deposited over vast areas. These pebbles are combined with sandy red clay. This terroir produces powerful wines, with a solid tannic structure, and good ageing potential.
