Villa Marinorema changed its name to Marmorières in 826. The story begins however in the vineyards, long before the Romans and Julius Caesar granted the vineyards of ‘la Clape’ their highest acclaim. In 1826 Marquis of Raymond-Lasbordes was the first generation of the family who settled in Marmorières and has built the current castle inspired by plans from the eighteenth century.
The entire vineyards of Marmorières were restored after its destruction by phylloxera between 1868 and 1878. It was followed in 1911 by purchasing additional 20 hectares of vines in adjoining field, which produce Pays d’Oc wines. In 2005 the family’s 8th generation, Jehan Woillemont, engineer oenologist, purchased the 41 hecters at Commandery of St. Pierre la Garrigue, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the la Clape appellation. Half of the vineyards were abundant, and it took 8 years for it to be renewed and the surrounding olive trees to be re-cultivated. Today’s generation, represented by the four children of the Count of Woillemont (Alain, Christine, Erik and Jehan), run the family vineyards and Château.
The ‘La Clape’ is a former Island site and therefore hosts wonderful, unique diversity of fauna and flora. On our estate you will find olive, almond, and pine trees, fennel, rock roses and many fragrant scrubland flowers and herbs. Hares, rabbits and partridges share territory with wild boar in bright sunshine and some windy whims. Marmorières covers 350 hectares in the municipalities of Vinassan and Fleury d'Aude. The oldest and largest of our vineyards, where the remains of ninth century castle can be found, is located in the heart of the old "Lakes Island" and enjoy the finest soils for wine production. The surrounding scrubland, pine forests, the proximity to the sea and the clay-limestone soils results in a perfect balance of aromatics, ripeness with fresh berries and savory mineral notes across all the estates wines.
