Vacqueyras with its old village charm, its narrow streets that climb towards the wall surrounding the Château des Vassadel, the church with its elegant Provençal bell at the top of a 12th century guard tower, gained unparalleled reputation of its wines dating back to early 15th century. Vacqueyras received the A.O.C. Côtes du Rhône Decree appellation in 1937, and in 1955 was promoted to Côtes du Rhône Villages status, becoming a named village in 1967. In 1990, Vacqueyras was granted its own AOC, the first in the region since Gigondas.
It was in 1981, following the accidental death of his father, that Pierre Marseille, freshly pharmacy school graduate, decided to take up the management of the estate started by his dad in 1959. Pierre continued the transformation of the former silk farm to a wine estate with modern winery. To date, the estate’s 58 hectares with 21within the AOP Vacqueyras classification, are all in the Dentelles de Montmirail Massif and Mount Ventoux region.
The vineyards are planted with the classic mix of Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre, at high-altitude with average age of 55-years old. The soils are clay, sand and quite rocky, planted amid sun dried ‘garrigue,’ which lends herbal complexity to this juicy Southern Rhône Vacqueyras.
