Galicia-Ribeiro

Region:

Adegas Francisco Fernandez Sousa, located in Prado de Miño, was founded in 1956 but Francisco’s family has been growing vines and making wine in the region for generations. Fernando was a history professor in college and after his research about viticulture and winemaking in Ribeiro for his dissertation, he decided come back to his roots, to the small village where he was born, and focus on terroir driven wines. Francisco with the help of winemaker José M. Martinez, was the first elaborating 100% Treixadura and with indigenous yeasts.
Today the estate accounts for 12 hectares, scattered on more than 35 plots. The vines average age is about 70 years old planted on sandy loam & granitic soils of the steep slops of the Miño river. Vines are trained in pergolas using the traditional granite poles, or in high trellis system, keeping the bunches aerated and healthy.
The winery was rebuilt in the last decade, introducing modern technologies but keeping with the methodology of traditional elaboration.
